Physicochemical characteristics of sediment and benthic communities were studied in the proximity of seven sewage outfalls
with differences in flow and wastewater treatment in the Western Mediterranean Sea. Redox potential was the only abiotic parameter
which showed a pattern related with distance to outfalls, whereas granulometry, percentage of organic matter, metal concentrations
or pH did not show changes related with outfall presence. Benthic community analysis proved to be the most suitable monitoring
tool. The results showed that the highest impacted stations corresponded with those closest to outfall with the highest flow
and only pre-treatment, whilst a decrease of this tendency was detected in the locations where secondary treatment takes place.
Meta-analysis showed a decrease of amphipods and tanaids abundance as well as redox potential, as the indicators with the

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous in the environment; there are concerns about them due to their toxic
properties. Human activities could significantly contribute to the total PAH burden in river sediments. In this work, we document
the analysis of PAHs in sediments taken in the middle stretch of the Biobio River in south central Chile. This river is a
principal system, draining more than 24,000 km2 and subjected to a diverse variety of human-made stressors (pulp mill and urban effluents, agricultural drainage systems,
etc). During 2003, several sediment samples were taken in more than 45 sampling sites located in the river’s middle stretch.
Due to the granulometric characteristics (mainly sandy sediments), only 17 samples were analyzed, taking into consideration
the presence of a fine section within the sediment sample. Using HPLC with fluorescence detection, 15 EPA priority PAHs and
perylene were analyzed. The composition of PAHs in the sediment samples is rather similar between sites and levels averaged
104 ± 78 ng g−1 d.w. The highest levels were detected downstream from an industrial discharge. A good correlation was observed between PAH
levels and organic carbon content in the tested sediments; however, concentrations above 134 ng g−1 d.w. did not indicate correlation. The samples PAH ratios (Flu/Pyr and Chr/B(a)A) reveal a strong pyrolytic PAH pattern in
the sediments tested, supporting evidence indicating that PAHs come mainly from pyrolytic sources. This result contrasts with
previous records that have shown a natural influence in the upper basin and a petrogenic pattern near the mouth. 相似文献

Flatfish species, such as the turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), are common targets for toxic effects, since they are exposed through the food chain (ingestion of contaminated preys) and are in direct contact with the waterborne contaminant and sediments. Furthermore, these fish species live in close proximity to interstitial water that frequently dissolves high amounts of contaminants, including metals. Despite this significant set of characteristics, the present knowledge concerning flatfish contamination and toxicity by metals is still scarce. To attain the objective of assessing the effects of metals on a flatfish species, S. maximus specimens were chronically exposed to lead, copper and zinc, at ecologically relevant concentrations, and biochemical (oxidative stress: catalase and glutathione S-transferases activities, and lipid peroxidation; neurotoxicity: cholinesterase activity) parameters were assessed on selected tissues (gills and liver). Copper had no significant effects on all tested parameters; lead was causative of significant increases in liver GSTs activities and also in lipoperoxidation of gill tissue; exposure to zinc caused a significant increase in catalase activity of gill tissue. None of the tested metals elicited noteworthy effects in terms of neurotoxicity. The obtained results showed that only the metal lead is of some environmental importance, since it was able to cause deleterious modifications of oxidative nature at relevant concentrations. 相似文献

The Tubarão River rises in Santa Catarina, Brazil, and has been historically affected by coal mining activities around its springhead. To evaluate its water conditions, an investigation regarding a possible decontamination gradient associated with the increased river flow toward the estuary, as well as the influence of seasonality over this gradient was performed through a series of biomarkers (vitellogenin, comet assay, lipid peroxidation, protein carbonylation, gluthatione, gluthatione S-transferase, acetylcholinesterase, light microscopy in liver, and scanning electron microscopy in gills) and chemical analysis (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in bile and metal analysis in sediment) in the cichlid Geophagus brasiliensis. Two collections (summer and winter) were made in four distinct sites along the river, while sediments were sampled between those seasons. As expected, the contamination linked exclusively to mining activities was not observed, possibly due to punctual inputs of contaminants. The decontamination gradient was not observed, although seasonality seemed to have a critical role in the responses of biomarkers and availability of contaminants. In the summer, the fish presented higher histopathological damages and lower concentrations of PAHs, while in the winter they showed both higher genetic damage and accumulation of PAHs. Background, aim, and scope
Pharmaceuticals are emerging pollutants widely used in everyday urban activities which can be detected in surface, ground, and drinking waters. Their presence is derived from consumption of medicines, disposal of expired medications, release of treated and untreated urban effluents, and from the pharmaceutical industry. Their growing use has become an alarming environmental problem which potentially will become dangerous in the future. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about long-term effects in non-target organisms as well as for human health. Toxicity testing has indicated a relatively low acute toxicity to fish species, but no information is available on possible sublethal effects. During 2008 and 2009, an epidemic affected sponges of the genus Ircinia in the Western Mediterranean. Investigations at a site on the European coast (6o43′08.80′′N; 3o43′52.20′′W) and another on
the African coast (35o10′51.00′′N; 2o25′33.00′′W) revealed healthier African populations. The disease started with small pustules
on the sponge surface, which subsequently coalesced forming larger, extensive lesions. An ultrastructural study suggested
that a twisted rod is the etiological agent. It infected the sponges from the outside, initially killing the cells below the
ectosome and then penetrating deeper into the body. The sponges responded to the bacterial progression by secreting concentric
barriers of collagen and concentrating phagocytic cells at the diseased zones. This primitive immune system successfully resisted
the disease in many instances, although mortality reached 27% in the studied populations. Epidemic outbreaks recur each year

Southern Chile encompasses one of the most extensive fjord regions of the world, the Patagonia, currently exposed to natural
and anthropogenic perturbations. These fjord ecosystems provide important services to humans, which have not been adequately
measured and valued. As a consequence, ecosystem services are commonly ignored in public policy design and in the evaluation
of development projects. Here we tackle questions that are highly relevant for the nation’s development, namely (1) understanding
fjord functioning, and (2) developing management strategies based on ecosystem services, in order to secure simultaneous and
adequate use of these ecosystems which area influenced by ecological (e.g., biogeochemical) and productive (e.g., aquaculture,
fisheries) processes. We also seek to strengthen the analysis of fjord ecosystem value from the economical (including coastal
zoning), socio-cultural, institutional, and governmental points of view. In addition, the investigation of current and future
effects of climate change on this large region offers a unique opportunity to understand the social and economic consequences
of a global phenomenon at local to regional scales. Biogeochemical and socio-economic models will be used to simulate future

Riparian Bird Communities as Indicators of Human Impacts Along Mediterranean Streams 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Riparian areas link aquatic and terrestrial habitats, supporting species-rich bird communities, which integrate both terrestrial
and aquatic processes. For this reason, inclusion of riparian birds in stream bioassessment could add to the information currently
provided by existing programs that monitor aquatic organisms. To assess if bird community metrics could indicate stream conditions,
we sampled breeding birds in the riparian zone of 37 reaches in 5 streams draining watersheds representing a gradient of agricultural
intensity in central Italy. As a more direct indicator of water quality, stream macroinvertebrates were also sampled for computation
of the Italian Extended Biotic Index (IBE). An anthropogenic index was calculated within 1 km of sampled reaches based on
satellite-derived land-use classifications. Predictive models of macroinvertebrate integrity based on land-use and avian metrics
were compared using an information-theoretic approach (AIC). We also determined if stream quality related to the detection
of riverine species. Apparent bird species diversity and richness peaked at intermediate levels of land-use modification,
but increased with IBE values. Water quality did not relate to the detection of riverine species as a guild, but two species,
the dipper Cinclus cinclus and the grey wagtail Motacilla cinerea, were only observed in reaches with the highest IBE values. Small-bodied insectivorous birds and arboreal species were detected
more often in reaches with better water quality and in less modified landscapes. In contrast, larger and granivorous species
were more common in disturbed reaches. According to the information-theoretic approach, the best model for predicting water
quality included the anthropogenic index, bird species diversity, and an index summarizing the trophic structure of the bird
community. We conclude that, in combination with landscape-level information, the diversity and trophic structure of riparian
bird communities could serve as a rapid indicator of stream-dwelling macroinvertebrates and, therefore, degradation of in-stream

Territorial user rights for fisheries have been advocated as a way to achieve sustainable resource management. However, few researchers have empirically assessed their potential as ancillary marine conservation instruments by comparing them to no‐take marine protected areas. In kelp (Lessonia trabeculata) forests of central Chile, we compared species richness, density, and biomass of macroinvertebrates and reef fishes among territorial‐user‐right areas with low‐level and high‐level enforcement, no‐take marine protected areas, and open‐access areas in 42 100‐m subtidal transects. We also assessed structural complexity of the kelp forest and substratum composition. Multivariate randomized permutation tests indicated macroinvertebrate and reef fish communities associated with the different access regimes differed significantly. Substratum composition and structural complexity of kelp forest did not differ among access regimes. Univariate analyses showed species richness, biomass, and density of macroinvertebrates and reef fishes were greater in highly enforced territorial‐user‐right areas and no‐take marine protected areas than in open‐access areas. Densities of macroinvertebrates and reef fishes of economic importance were not significantly different between highly enforced territorial‐user‐right and no‐take marine protected areas. Densities of economically important macroinvertebrates in areas with low‐level enforcement were significantly lower than those in areas with high‐level enforcement and no‐take marine protected areas but were significantly higher than in areas with open access. Territorial‐user‐right areas could be important ancillary conservation instruments if they are well enforced. Paraíba do Sul River is located at a very densely inhabited region of Brazil crossing the three most industrialized states of the country (S?o Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro states). As a result, industrial and farming residues as well as urban sewage are frequently disposed without appropriate treatment. The current study aimed at investigating the water quality in three reservoirs along the Paraíba do Sul River (Ilha dos Pombos, Santa Cecília and Santa Branca), through physiological, morphological, biochemical, and genetic biomarkers. The bioindicator chosen was the catfish Pimelodus maculatus, sampled during the dry (June 2008) and rainy (February 2009) seasons. Also, some water physicochemical parameters were analyzed from the sampling sites, but displayed no alterations according to the Brazilian Agency for Water Quality Legislation. Branchial carbonic anhydrase activity was inhibited in the dry season, while renal carbonic anhydrase activity was inhibited in the rainy season in the Santa Branca reservoir, indicating disturbance of osmoregulatory and acid-base regulation processes. Histopathological alterations were observed in the gills (neoplasic and tissue hyperplasia processes) and liver (necrosis), indicating serious damage to the functional integrity of these organs. A high incidence of melanomacrophage centers was observed in the liver, suggesting an intense immune response in all reservoirs. Acetylcholinesterase and catalase activity showed also differences corroborating some morphological results. Likewise, the induction of the micronucleus and DNA damage indicate genotoxicity, but mainly in the Santa Branca reservoir. Thus, the health status of P. maculatus warrants caution in the use of the water from the 3 reservoirs for direct human consumption, particularly after the accidental spill of endosulfan in November 2008, three months before the rainy season sampling. 相似文献
